Roatan

Number of islands: Roatán is the largest of the Bay Islands of Honduras, which are a group of islands that includes Roatán, Guanaja, and Utila, plus smaller islands like Barbareta, Morat, and St. Helena, and over 50 cays. Therefore, Roatán itself is a single island, but it is the centerpiece of an archipelago with numerous other islands and smaller cays.  

Official language: The official language of Roatán is Spanish, as it is part of Honduras. However, English is widely spoken 

Population: Estimated population is ~110,000 (2020)

Capital city: Coxen Hole. 

Local foods: Popular local foods in Roatan include baleadas (folded flour tortillas with beans and cheese), sopa de caracol (conch soup), and fried fish with plantains. Other must-try dishes are tapado, fresh seafood, and street foods like tamales and catrachitas, along with the signature Monkey Lala cocktail. 

Local festivals: Roatán hosts various local festivals, including the Garifuna Celebration, Semana Santa (Holy Week), the Jonesville Pirate Festival, and the Roatan Kite Festival. Other local and seasonal events include the BBQ Challenge, Feria Juniana, and various holiday celebrations.  

How to get there?

By air

Direct international flights: Several airlines offer direct flights to Roatan from cities in North America (like Atlanta, Houston, Miami, Toronto) and Central America (like El Salvador)#.

Domestic flights: You can take domestic flights from other parts of Honduras, such as Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula, and La Ceiba#.

By sea

Ferry from La Ceiba: This is a popular and affordable option for those already in Honduras. The ferry takes about 75 minutes, and there are daily departures.

Ferry from Utila: There is also a ferry service available from the nearby Bay Island of Utila.

Cruise ship: Roatan has two main cruise ship terminals: Mahogany Bay and Port of Roatan.

Private charters: You can book a private charter to arrive in Roatan. 

If flying to mainland Honduras first

Fly to San Pedro Sula: You can fly into San Pedro Sula, then take a domestic flight to La Ceiba or use other ground transportation#.

Fly or bus to La Ceiba: From San Pedro Sula, you can take a bus or a domestic flight to La Ceiba#.

Take a ferry from La Ceiba: From the La Ceiba ferry terminal (Muelle de Cabotaje), take the ferry to Roatan.
